JETAA Canada National Conference has wrapped up in Winnipeg. After 10 years of last hosting the conference, JETAA Prairies hosted the event at the Canadian Museum of Human Rights. Representatives from JETAA BC/Yukon, JETAA Calgary, JETAA Edmonton, JETAA Toronto, JETAA Ottawa, and JETAA Quebec/Atlantique, as well as representatives from the Japan Local Government Centre in New York (CLAIR) and the three JETAA USA representatives attended the event.
The conference kicked off with a video message from the Consul General of Japan in Calgary, Shigenobu Kobayashi and a welcome reception. During the three-day conference, the Canadian chapter representatives presented their respective chapters’ events during the past year and the challenges that each chapters had faced. The JETAA USA reps also presented their year-in-review including the JET 30 Celebrations. In addition to these presentations, there was a brainstorming session on what activities a chapter would like to do in the future or how to tackle a current issue.
It has been a productive three days. JET Prairies would like to thank the Consul General of Japan in Calgary, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the Japan Local Government Centre in New York, JETAA USA reps, all the Canadian chapter delegates, the Canadian Museum of Human Rights, The Mere, and all the JET Prairies alumni and guests who attended the conference.
The past Saturday night, we had our growing karaoke event. Twelve were present at our karaoke event including the new JET participants. Our karaoke program of choice is Karafun. Some members brought drinks and snacks. Karafun’s catalog even contained famous TV theme songs like from The Transformers, Beverley Hillbillies, and The Flinstones (but there was no Jetsons’ theme song).
Our next event will be at Ai-Kon which takes place from July 27th to the 29th at the RBC Convention Centre at 375 York Avenue in Winnipeg. We will have a table setup there and alumni will present information about working in Japan. If you are JET alumni and want to help out during Ai-Kon, let us know via the contact form!

On May 12th, we had our first Karaoke Night! Once you do karaoke in Japan, it’s very hard to shake the habit off after returning to your home country. If you are wondering which karaoke machine we used, we used Karafun. Flight of Conchords songs ruled the evening. If you somehow didn’t get the chance to go, don’t worry! We will hold another JETAA Prairies Karaoke Night again! So, stay tuned!
